Discussion about a campaign that led to comparison of figure sizes: 18mm and 15mm

There's been a bit of discussion amongst some of us at the club about starting a new campaign. The default ruleset for resolving battles is DBA, as it means we can get in a campaign move or two on a meeting night and still fit in at least one encounter. Campaigns played to date include Roman civil wars, Sengoku Japan, and the First Crusade. Possibilities for the next campaign at this point are the War of the Roses, Pelopponesian Wars, Dark age Briton, or possibly a general ancient Medierranean or Italian (400BC?) campaign.

The discussion briefly swerved in the direction of scales to use, with the consensus being to stick with 15mm, then we discussed brands to use. Eureka miniatues is a local manufacturer (Nick who runs the show there is a top bloke), and one of the ranges he produces under licence is AB. Now the figures are very nice: vell proportioned, nicely made. However they tent to be 18mm rather than 15mm, and the discussion touched upon how they compared with other brands. To set this one to rest, I took some photos comparing different brands, and you can see for yourself the results.

Here are the AB Romans compared to Old Glory 15's (1940 Wehrmacht for those wondering)
AB against three Chariot Gold and one Essex (third from the left on the stand)

...and compared to a couple of Corvus Belli...
...and possible the closest match, the AB next to a pair or Xyston Thracian javelinmen. Note that the Thracians have about an extra 2.5mm from the base they're on.

The legionaries and Thracians from another angle: maybe they wouldn't look so bad from two feet in average lighting?

With plumes, mounted on bases, and at least against a true 15mm opponent, the AB's will likely look a little big. The other issue is that, with these legionaries at least, I had to trim the bases and cut some corners off to be able to stagger the four of them to fit on a 40mm wide base. So, I'm afraid it won't be AB's for me when I paint up some Late Republican Romans.
