Clash of New Aircraft

After a bit of a hiatus, I've managed to get some Jet Age games going again. These, and others in the near future, will be done as part of a club Bush Wars campaign set in (eternally) 1979 Imaginafrica. In this setting, different powers sponsor or sell to various Imaginafrican states, leading to clashes of forces using equipment and vehicles that was generally obsolete or phased out in the first and often second world. So...

This action saw four MiG 19s of the Kalemniktan (KAL) Air Force on a CAP sweep over the contested capital of Zeebia (ZEB),  site of vicious ongoing urban battles between the invaders and the defenders. While the KAL have plenty of aircraft, their fast-jet pilot cohort is relatively inexperienced and the bulk of their air superiority fleet is old Soviet aircraft. The ZEB had up to that point in the conflict only managed to put some MiG 17s and MiG 19s into the fight, so it was a surprise to the KAL when a small flight of F5As intercepted them.

No radars were used given their propensity to fail and the subsequent dressing down pilots could receive afterwards for breaking their airframe's electronics. The ZEB pilots spotted the KAL first and turned into them, getting ready for hard turns in order to fire off IRMs then dive out of there before the KAL numbers told against them.

As the two groups of AC prepared to make close approaches flying past, the lead ZEB pilot had a head-on shot against the lead KAL MiG. Against all the odds, he hit. All the KAL jet had to do was make a save against the moderate damage roll from the F5

Chance took another swipe at the KAL pilots: the A/C Robust test against the damage roll was an abject failure and the lead MiG 19 broke apart in the sky. This was too much for the other, green, pilots in the flight. In accordance with their ROE they dived steeply, went supersonic, and headed for home. While this was a rare and sorely needed victory for the Zeebians,it was likely to only stir up the hornet's nest. The Kalemniktans would be back!
